IOM Hosted Training on Evacuation Centre Management, Enhancing Fiji's Disaster Preparedness
Pacific Harbour – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and Save the Children, successfully held a Training of Trainers (ToT) on evacuation centre management from 5 to 9 November. This ToT is part of the Strengthening National and Community Resilience to Disaster and Displacement Risks in the Republic of Fiji project, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The high-level ToT targeted 22 participants who played critical roles in managing evacuation at divisional and community levels. This included disaster service liaison officers from various ministries; representatives from organizations involved in constructing, retrofitting and managing evacuation centres; and senior planning officers from each divisional commissioner’s office.
The ToT progressed through the Evacuation Centre Management Training Package, which is specifically designed for Fiji. Consisting of nine modules, the package covered both the broader aspects of camp management – universal design, gender-based violence and humanitarian principles, to name a few – and displacement challenges specific to the Fijian context, including the National Evacuation Centre Guidelines.
Through the construction of multi-purpose evacuation centre, community-based capacity building and this ToT, IOM has been helping Fijian citizens to prepare for the upcoming cyclone season.
