East Sepik – Following a series of significant environmental events throughout 2024, communities in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, have been provided with emergency relief items.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) – in collaboration with the National Disaster Centre, the European Union, and the East Sepik Provincial Administration – has conducted tracking matrix assessments of communities affected by disaster displacement. IOM then distributed essential relief items to 250 households in Angoram and Worsera Gawi districts of East Sepik, prioritizing the most vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, women and the elderly.
“We are responding to these incidents with life-saving assistance,” IOM Field Office Coordinator, Sebastian Hurokoli, said. “The main purpose of this current mission is to provide assistance to people affected by the earthquake and flooding along the Sepik River.”
The distributed items included shelter kits, hygiene kits and water containers. For those whose homes were devastated by this year’s environmental events, the shelter kits provided much needed aid.
Going forward, IOM will continue to work with affected communities in East Sepik to identify and respond to their needs.
