Port Moresby - In support of the national and provincial disaster centres’ efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and better address the needs of people displaced by disasters, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is providing Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), and Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) training to disaster responders in Madang province.

“Madang province has over 15,000 displaced persons living in care centres following the eruption of Manam volcano and they really need support. I believe this training will empower participants to help the government in its efforts to address the needs of displaced Manam Islanders,” said Rudolf Mongallee, Director for Madang Provincial Disaster Centre.

The training took place from 23 to 27 May 2022 and equipped disaster responders with the skills, knowledge, and a better understanding of how to better manage displacements and camps or ‘care centres’ in line with national and international standards.

Attended by 22 participants, the training in Madang comes one week after IOM’s CCCM and DTM trainings in Lae, Morobe province. Participants included staff from provincial, district and local level governments, non-governmental organizations, faith-based organizations, and the police. The CCCM and DTM trainings in Morobe were attended by 30 and 21 participants, respectively.

“This training has enlightened me on the importance of IDP data collection, processing, and reporting. The DTM is important to adopt into our disaster emergency response mechanisms to help us to better assist the displaced and mobile populations in the province,” said Dennis Kabekabe from Anglicare Church of Papua New Guinea.

The trainings were delivered in partnership with the Provincial Disaster Centres and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
