Tonga Strengthens its Borders with IOM Developed Integrated Border Management System
Nuku'alofa, Tonga – Travellers entering and departing the Kingdom of Tonga can now expect a smoother, faster and more secure journey, thanks to the launch of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) as Tonga's new Border Management Information System (BMIS). Officially operational since 26 October 2024, MIDAS replaces the previous border platform, setting new standards in efficiency and security at Tonga’s borders.
Designed and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the IOM Development Fund and the Government of Japan, MIDAS offers Tonga an advanced, real-time system to streamline the processing of passenger arrivals and departures.
The new system empowers immigration officials to swiftly manage cross-border movements while enhancing security by detecting and preventing human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and other risks.
The transition to MIDAS has been seamless, with Tongan Customs and Immigration officers quickly adapting to the new technology through comprehensive training provided by IOM in partnership with Vanuatu’s immigration officials. Vanuatu, having implemented MIDAS earlier this year, collaborated with Tongan officials, exemplifying regional cooperation within the Pacific to strengthen border management.
At the official handover ceremony on 30th October 2024, MIDAS workstations, mobile kits, and other resources were transferred from IOM to the Tongan government, further symbolizing the country’s commitment to efficient border processing and security.
"With MIDAS in place, we are dedicated to facilitating a safe, smooth experience for travellers entering and exiting our borders while advancing national interests in border security," said the Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, the Deputy Prime Minister of Tonga.
“We congratulate Tonga on this significant achievement in enhancing border security and stand ready to provide ongoing support to ensure that MIDAS as the new border management information system will provide further advancements to immigration services for Tonga,” said Solomon Kantha, Chief of Mission for IOM’s coordination office for the Pacific in Fiji.
