IOM and USAID Respond to the Earthquake in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea
Port Moresby – A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck 56 kilometers southeast of Madang province in Papua New Guinea (PNG) on 7 October 2023. The tremors were felt also in other provinces, namely Southern Highlands, Chimbu and Morobe.
The most impacted Local-Level Governments (LLGs) in Madang province include Ambenob LLG (23 wards) and Madang Urban LLG (10 wards). Updates from these LLGs are currently being verified and consolidated by a joint assessment by the government.
The Madang Provincial Disaster Centre, serving as the lead government agency on the ground, has coordinated efforts with key stakeholders, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), PNG Defense Force, Royal PNG Constabulary, PNG Red Cross Society, Madang Provincial Health Authority and representatives of the provincial government office, to conduct comprehensive assessments, including the implementation of IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix tool.
Supported by the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), IOM worked in partnership with the National Disaster Centre and Madang Provincial Disaster Centre in carrying out assessments and delivering critical assistance to the affected locations in Madang province. IOM dispatched 200 mosquito nets and 200 blankets to affected communities.
As part of the response, IOM deployed additional staff members from Mendi, Lae and Wewak to Madang. Meanwhile, IOM teams are raising community awareness on disasters through the use of pamphlets on natural hazards that were developed in partnership with the NDC through USAID/BHA funding
Initial assessment findings reveal that seven individuals sustained injuries related to the earthquake, three of whom suffered severe injuries. No fatalities have been reported so far.
As the situation continues to evolve, IOM remains steadfast in its commitment to working with local authorities and partners, ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary support and resources during this challenging time.
