IOM and USAID's Training Strengthens Mulitaka Landslide Response in Papua New Guinea
Port Moresby – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), funded by the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) organized a Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) training on 15-19 July 2024 in Wabag town, Enga province. The training brought together 31 participants from the Enga provincial, district and local level government, and faith-based organizations. This initiative, requested by the Enga Provincial Administration, equipped local authorities and partners with essential skills to manage displacement sites and effectively engage with the affected communities.
In partnership with the National Disaster Centre, IOM co-leads the Shelter, Non-Food Items, and CCCM cluster, aiming to elevate standards and ensure coordinated responses at national and sub-national levels. A critical component of this effort is the establishment of information centres in key displacement areas, serving as vital hubs for two-way communication with affected communities.
"This training is an essential step in strengthening our disaster response framework. By empowering our government officials, we can better serve and protect our communities in times of crisis," said Mr. Kenneth Andrew, Deputy Administrator - Disaster Controller. Expressing gratitude to IOM and USAID/BHA, Mr. Andrew acknowledged the importance of this crucial training in addressing the Mulitaka landslide.
IOM's ongoing efforts focus on effectively managing displacement sites, identifying service gaps and supporting solutions to displacement. Through CCCM activities, IOM assists service providers in health, water and sanitation, food and protection sectors, ensuring their responses are tailored to the needs of displaced communities.
